The Myth of Recycling: Why So Much Ends Up in Landfills Anyway

Plastic Pollution

Recycling has long been promoted as the solution to our growing waste problem. We sort our plastics, metals, and paper, trusting they’ll be turned into new products instead of filling landfills. However, a large percentage of recyclables still end up in landfills due to contamination, lack of market demand, or improper processing.

The Harsh Reality of Recycling

Only about 9% of plastics are actually recycled. Contamination, such as food residue on containers, can spoil entire batches of recyclables. Moreover, changes in global markets, like China reducing waste imports, have left many recycling centers with no option but to send materials to landfills. Even when items are recycled, many materials are downcycled—turned into lower-quality products with limited reuse, eventually ending up as waste.

The Problem with Plastics

Plastic is especially problematic. With numerous types of plastic, sorting is costly and complex. Most plastics are only recyclable in specific conditions, and even then, 91% of all plastic produced has never been recycled. Products labeled as recyclable can often mislead consumers, giving a false sense of environmental responsibility.

Greenwashing & Consumer Misconceptions

Many brands promote recyclable packaging as eco-friendly, but this greenwashing often hides the fact that recycling infrastructure is limited, and the majority of plastic waste isn't recycled. This can lull consumers into overconsumption, believing recycling will solve the waste issue.

What Can We Do?

Instead of relying on recycling, let’s focus on REDUCING, REUSING, and going ZERO-WASTE to make a real impact! 💚 Here’s how:

  1. Reduce Consumption: Buy less and choose products with minimal packaging.

  2. Reuse and Repair: Opt for reusable items and repair what you can.

  3. Embrace Zero-Waste: Opt for products designed to reduce or eliminate single-use items, like EcoGoTravel's reusable and eco-friendly essentials.

  4. Support Circular Economy: Choose brands that prioritize reusability.

  5. Compost: Divert organic waste from landfills.

  6. Advocate for Change: Push for policies that improve recycling systems and encourage waste reduction.
